Adele Plunkett: Una tejana en Texas

Race Report IM Texas 2017

I signed up for Ironman Texas only to hear numerous reports of the typical weather for that race in previous years: either extreme heat, or record floods.  How exciting!  But the real reason I signed up for the race was the location.  I’m born and raised in Texas, and I wanted to go “home” to race with my family as my cheering squad.  My best half-IM race had been in Austin in 2013, and now I wanted a PR (personal record) in a full IM nearby.  I was committed to Houston.

As the weather seemed to be the main topic of conversation, it’s worth mentioning that the date of the race was moved forward one month in comparison with previous years.  April is a much nicer month in Texas than May, but weather can be variable all year.  The days before the race were hot and humid, just what I didn’t want for race day.  The weather report predicted thunderstorms for race day as part of a cold front.  I also didn’t want thunder on race day.  Just to add another uncertainty, the water temperature was on the border between wetsuit legal/optional, and we didn’t know until 4 am on race day that we would swim without wetsuits (water temperature 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit).  A huge thanks to Missy at Austin Tri-cyclist for finding me a speed suit just in time!!

La natación / The swim

Race day.  We started in “waves”, and actually the “open water” swim felt relatively open, so I was able to swim comfortably without fighting too much with the other swimmers.  The artificial “lake” at The Woodlands (location of the race, outside of Houston) ends in a narrow and shallow canal.  It was fun ending the swim with plenty of cheers from both sides of the canal.  The day before we had been able to do a practice swim, which although the water wasn’t anything special, at least I was able to connect with a few Austin running friends (including my first marathon coach Karen, and another triathlon expert Amy) who gave me some race tips.

El ciclismo / The bike

The bike course was like riding on the Radial from Piedra Roja (our typical bike ride outside Santiago).  The training rides that Lalo sent us on with Team Bustos prepared me perfectly.  The even better part was that they shut down an entire lane of the Hardy Tollway, so we had 2 lanes of the divided highway.  The cyclists owned the road!  The less good part was the strong wind that arrived on the way back of the second loop (we did two loops on the Tollway before returning to the town center).  When I made the final turn, it was like hitting a wall of wind.  As a result, many riders formed pelotons that blocked the road.  The only way back was to put my head down, pedal hard, and hope to arrive safely.  At least I was fine for energy, because I had been working on bike nutrition with Felipe Araya during the recent months.

El trote / The run

The benefit of the wind was that it brought along with it a cold front and I could feel the temperatures dropping throughout the run.  Run temps were around 70 degrees, pretty comfortable for a run.  I started the run at a relatively “conservative” pace for me, given that I hadn’t been able to run more than 1 hour at a time in the months leading up to the race, and I hadn’t taken even a single step running in the street (only treadmill).  I didn’t want to risk not finishing the race, although I know that always a very real possibility in a long race.  Thanks to some insoles that my podiatrist uncle had made for me just two days ago, my plantar fascitis didn’t flare up nor stop me, and I was able to maintain the same pace.

Nunca me aburrí.

But to keep my head straight, I have to thank a million times the best family fan club ever!  My parents, aunt and uncle were waiting for me in key points on the run course, an my boyfriend Pato rode his bike to surprise me numerous times.  I hope they also enjoyed the race!   The run course was 3 loops around the lake/canal, one part on the walkway near the canal and the other part through an impressive neighborhood of nearby mansions.  I never got bored, the scenery kept me moving forward.  In fact, I was just so happy to be running (shout out to the physical therapists at MedPro in Santiago that got me there!).

La meta / The finish-line

I’m happy to say that this story ends with crossing the finish line.  And I had a nostalgic, smiling moment as I arrived.  I was remembering all of the important moments in training that got me here, all of the support of my triathlon teams, friends, and family that allowed me to chase my dreams.  In case you’re thinking of racing the IM Texas one day, the race organizers were top-notch, and the race wouldn’t be such a success without the incredible volunteers.  We were told there were 4000 volunteers for about 2700 athletes.  The volunteers were there to help with all the pre-race prep, all the critical moments inside the transition zone and on the course, and even showered us with sunblock throughout the race.  During the race -- considering that race day is the culmination of months of training -- I’m incredibly grateful to have the support of so many strangers and an experienced race organization to remove any of the unnecessary uncertainties. Of course, they still can’t control the weather, but this year it was nonetheless better than expected.
